Some of the things we experience like past hurt, disappointment, even trauma have a way of revisiting us at different points in our lives. Sometimes it’s subtle, like a memory that stirs old feelings. Other times, it’s more like a wave that knocks the wind out of you.

When that happens, we often try to “self care” our way out of it by journaling, meditating, reading, resting. While these things absolutely have their place, there’s a limit to what self care can do when the burden is spiritual.

God invites us to something deeper. He offers us the opportunity to be freed from the weight of shame, guilt, and identity confusion, not by striving harder, but by surrendering it all to Him.

And honestly? One of the greatest gifts God has given us (second to salvation) is the gift of surrender.

What It Means to Surrender

To surrender doesn’t mean giving up. It means handing over what was never meant to be carried alone. Jesus reminds us that He can handle the weight of our burdens:

“Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart,
and you will find rest for your souls.
For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” — Matthew 11:28–30

When we surrender, we release control and the illusion that we can fix, heal, or manage everything on our own.

Jesus already took the place of our shame, guilt, and reservations through His sacrifice for us. Because of that, we’ve been given permission to free ourselves from what weighs our spirit down.

That means you don’t have to carry:

  • The guilt from your past.
  • The anxiety about what’s next.
  • The weight of trying to “get it right” all the time.
  • The belief that you’re too broken, too late, or too far gone.

You can surrender it. You can give it to God to handle. Because He’s so much bigger than the things we go through. He knows, He understands, and He’s always available to do the heavy lifting.

What Surrender Looks Like

Surrender isn’t just a spiritual concept, it’s something we can practice every day.

Here are a few ways to start:

  • Start your day with release. Before you reach for your phone, take a deep breath and say, “God, I give this day to You. Help me rest in Your plan, not mine.”
  • Pray instead of overthinking. The next time you find yourself spiraling, pause and say, “Lord, I don’t know what to do with this but You do.”
  • Journal your handoff. Write down the things that are weighing on you, and then literally write, “I surrender this to You.”
  • Meditate on what God says about you. Let His Word reshape your self-image and story. Strengthen your faith by believing what His word says about your and/or your situation.

The Freedom in Surrender

There’s peace in letting go. There’s healing in handing over what’s too heavy. There’s renewal in remembering that you don’t have to do it all on your own.

Surrender isn’t weakness, it’s worship. It’s the quiet, powerful act of saying: God, I trust you with my life and my circumstances.

And in that space, He gives rest. Not just physical rest, but soul deep restoration — the kind that no planner, self help book, or podcast could ever reach.

The next time you feel that weight, the guilt, the shame, the pressure, pause and remember:
You don’t have to hold it anymore.
You can hand it over.
You can surrender.

Because the same God who gave you life also gave you the freedom to rest in Him.

As always, take good care and live well nourished.
